Travel Guides

A TRAVELER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

4th edition, Barry Boyce, 2004. Paperback, 290 pp., with 60 color photos and 3 maps, $18.95. The Galápagos Islands, a remote paradise, are as mysterious as ever. But the details of travel to these Enchanted Islands are no longer a mystery. The essentials of a "how to" travel adventure to the Land of Darwin are now available in this comprehensive book. From the basics of which airline to choose to a detailed analysis of the Tour Operator network, Barry Boyce describes the rules and tells you how to play the Galápagos adventure travel game. Entire chapters are devoted to such topics as choosing a tour, what to pack (and not to pack), photographic equipment (including underwater photography and video), Galápagos history, wildlife (with an orientation towards photo opportunities), and a detailed tour of the islands. If you're thinking of going to the Galápagos, this is your handbook.

Field Guides

GALAPAGOS: A NATURAL HISTORY

2nd edition, M.H. Jackson, 1993. Paperback, 315 pp., with illustrations and color plates, $24.95. This is, without a doubt, the most comprehensive natural history guide to the Galápagos Islands, including well-written chapters on evolution & ecology, plant life, reptiles, sea birds, land birds, native mammals, intertidal & marine life, and conservation. Both a General Index and Species Index are provided as well as a complete checklist of plants and animals. You will refer constantly to this essential Field Guide.

BIRDS, MAMMALS, & REPTILES OF THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS, Andy Swash and Rob Still, 2000. Plasti-coated, 168 pp with 53 color plates digitally compiled from a composite of 500 photos. $25.95. The composite plates are works of art and clearly enable the reader to identify each animal with confidence - especially the land birds and shore birds, which can be somewhat tricky. New and a most welcome addition to our list, this book is very highly recommended. Absolutely the best identification guide!

A FIELD GUIDE TO SEA STARS AND OTHER ECHINODERMS OF GALAPAGOS, Cleveland Hickman, 1998. Spiral bound, 83 pp., 127 photographs and several illustrations, $16.95. This is a compact field guide to the commonly encountered echinoderms of the Galápagos. The photos of the sea stars are excellent and very helpful in identification. Recommended for divers and serious snorkelers & "tidepoolers".

A FIELD GUIDE TO MARINE MOLLUSCS OF GALAPAGOS, Cleveland Hickman, 1999. Spiral bound, 150pp., 196 photographs and several illustrations, $20.95. This field guide describes and illustrates in full color more than 250 species of the most common and characteristic of Galápagos intertidal and shallow-water molluscs. The accurate illustrations and precise descriptions enable visitors to identify any of the common molluscs encountered, whether seashells washed ashore or living molluscs seen while diving or snorkeling. Includes identification features, glossary, and index to scientific names.

FISHES OF THE PACIFIC COAST, Gar Goodson, 1988. Paperback, 267 pp., $10.95. This guidebook will familiarize you with the fishes of the Pacific coast, including the Galápagos Islands. Each species is shown in full color with a thorough identification as well as behavioral traits. Compact enough to take with you and use as a field guide, the book also illustrates the differences between juvenile, adult, and breeding stage of the same fish.

REEF FISH IDENTIFICATION: GALAPAGOS, 2nd edition, Paul Humann & Ned Delooch, 2003. Paperback, 226 pp., $39.95. This comprehensive, easy-to-use guide is an excellent source for identification of Galápagos marine creatures. In addition to dozens of photos, the guide offers information on behavior, distribution, distinctive features, and different phases of Galápagos fishes, as well as an index to marine mammals and reptiles. There is usually a race for this book after a Galápagos snorkeling session "to see what we saw." An invaluable field guide.

FLOWERING PLANTS OF THE GALAPAGOS, Conley K. McMullen, 1999, Paperback, 370 pp., with 383 color photos, $29.95. Highly recommended, this is the only comprehensive yet compact guide to the flora of the Galápagos. The plant key is very easy to use in the field, making identification a relatively simple process. The book is extremely well organized, has well-written descriptions and excellent photographs, and covers many of the exotic (introduced) as well as all the indigenous (native) and endemic plants. This is the book that the Naturalist Guides have been waiting for, and now use extensively in the field.

PLANTS OF THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS, Eileen K. Schofield, 1984. Paperback, 159 pp., $10.95. This handy pocket-sized book, illustrated by the author, works very well as an overall orientation to the more common plants of the Galápagos Islands.

WHALES, DOLPHINS, AND PORPOISES, Mark Carwardine, 1995. Paperback, 255 pp., $19.95. We've used a lot of whale identification books, and this is by far the best. The illustrations are numerous and are incredibly well done. There are even drawings of action sequences, including breaching and diving, which help in the identification. Often, there are squares showing color variations, which are also quite useful. While cetaceans are not usually the highlight of a Galápagos trip, this book is highly recommended as a guide to whales throughout your world travels.

THE STARS: A NEW WAY TO SEE THEM, H.A. Rey, 1980. Paperback, 150 pp., $11.95. Absolutely the best, easiest-to-read guide to the stars. The book is also a great beginner's astronomy text, with clear explanations of the seasons, the zodiac, time and time zones, planets, light-years, and even normally difficult concepts such as celestial latitude (declination) and longitude (right ascension). The illustrations and sky charts are also excellent. For the Galápagos night sky, refer to Calendar Chart 15, "The Sky As Seen From Any Place Between Latitudes 10º North and 10º South." If you're a star gazer or even "just interested in the stars," buy this book and take it with you.

GALAPAGOS WILDLIFE: AN INTRODUCTION TO FAMILIAR SPECIES, Kavanagh/Leung, 2001. Plastic card, $5.95. A laminated fold-up identification card highlighting many of the commonly encountered birds, marine mamals, reptiles, invertebrates and nearshore fishes. Color illustrations.

On Evolution

  THE BEAK OF THE FINCH

Jonathan Weiner, 1994. Paperback, 336 pp., $14.95. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Nonfiction (1995). Easy-to-read, this is one of the most significant and enlightening books on evolution since Darwin's Origin of Species. The author presents a very personal account of the research on the Darwin's finches conducted by Peter and Rosemary Grant. The Grants have been studying the finches on the island of Daphne Major in the Galápagos since 1973. During this time, they witnessed and thoroughly documented evolutionary changes in the finches - a truly significant scientific achievement. The second half of the book is quite thought-provoking, as Weiner puts the Grants' findings into the context of contemporary evolutionary research and thought. This book is very highly recommended to everyone as must reading.

Coffee Table Books

PORTRAITS OF GALAPAGOS, Tui De Roy and Mark Jones, 1990. Hardcover, 98 pp., $29.95. Portraits of Galápagos is a photographic essay of the islands' fascinating wildlife, including an intimate description of each photo. This is another collection of beautiful pictures taken by Tui De Roy, author of the classic, Galápagos: Islands Lost in Time.

Maps

MAP OF THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS, 4th edition, Kevin Healy, 2000. Approx. 21" x 26", $8.95. This colorful topographic map illustrates the Visitor and Snorkeling Sites as well as the distribution of Galápagos wildlife, including an insert of the Vegetation Zones. Provides historical information and useful touring tips.

Just for Fun

GALAPAGOS: DISCOVER AND COLOR, Monique Van Dousselaere, 1989. Paperback, 39 pp., $8.95. A bilingual natural history coloring book of the birds and animals of the Galápagos Islands for "children of all ages." It is accompanied by an 18 page booklet that describes each of the drawings. An excellent gift item.
